What If You're Not Waiting to Feel Ready?

A duck in a hoodie stands near a window, with soft light filtering through blinds as it begins to step out of the shadows.

I'll do it when I feel ready.

Most of us have said those words.

Maybe it's starting the business.

Having the conversation.

Applying for the job.

Setting the boundary.

We tell ourselves we'll do it when the timing is right.

When we have more confidence.

When we're less afraid.

When we finally feel... ready.

But what if "ready" isn't actually what we're waiting for?

What if we're waiting to feel safe?

That changes the conversation.

Because if being noticed once led to criticism, rejection, or shame, your nervous system may still respond as though those risks are present today.

Not because you're weak.

Not because you lack motivation.

Because your nervous system learned that staying small was protective.

The difficult part is that our nervous system doesn't automatically update itself just because our circumstances have changed.

A child who learned that attention wasn't safe may become an adult who hesitates to share their ideas.

Someone who learned that taking up space created conflict may spend years trying not to be "too much."

From the outside, it can look like procrastination.

On the inside, it often feels like protection.

So we wait.

We tell ourselves we're waiting until we're ready.

When what we're really longing for is the feeling that we'll be okay.

Maybe this week, instead of asking,

"Why can't I just do it?"

try asking,

"What would help this feel a little safer?"

Sometimes we don't need more confidence.

Sometimes we need to understand the part of us that's still trying to keep us safe.

Messy. Bumpy. Possible. -Leigh
